Accuracy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When engineers discuss precision injection molding, dimensional accuracy is often one of the first things that comes to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for medical device components, dimensional control can be critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A connector has to fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A seal has to locate correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A moving component needs the right clearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fluid path needs the right geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mating surface needs to be positioned correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here is an important engineering question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If a medical plastic component passes dimensional inspection, does that automatically mean it is a good part?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A component can be dimensionally correct and still have issues related to material compatibility, surface condition, flash, contamination, functional performance, process consistency, or validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why medical plastic components often require a much broader engineering perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">01 \u2014 Function Comes Before Dimensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dimensions are important because they support function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a medical plastic component with a sealing interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drawing may specify a very tight dimensional tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the actual sealing performance can also depend on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surface condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Material behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geometry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mating components<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assembly force<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same principle applies to connectors, valves, fluid-handling components, moving mechanisms, and other medical assemblies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dimension is rarely important simply because it is a dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important because it controls something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Good engineering starts by class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing a plastic for a medical application is not simply a matter of selecting the material with the highest strength or lowest cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers may need to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mechanical performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chemical compatibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temperature orientation, and processing conditions can all influence the final component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means material selection and manufacturing strategy should not be treated class=\"wp-block-heading\">03 \u2014 Surface Quality Can Matter as Much as Geometry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people hear \u201csurface quality,\u201d they often think about appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For medical components, that can be an incomplete way of looking at the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the application, surface characteristics can influence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Friction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sealing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact with other components<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluid interaction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleaning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Particle generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Functional performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p could it affect?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another example of why inspection criteria should be connected to product Can Become Functional Risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weld lines are a normal phenomenon in injection molding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They occur when separate flow fronts meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their presence does not automatically mean that a component is defective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But their <strong>location and characteristics<\/strong> can matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a weld line located in a highly loaded area, sealing interface, pressure-related component, or critical functional feature may require engineering evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why weld-line prediction can be useful during product and tooling development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is not simply to eliminate every weld line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may not be practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is to understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where will the flow fronts meet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What function is located there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the material and process provide sufficient performance?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Should the gate or geometry be reconsidered?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">06 \u2014 Cleanliness and Contamination Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dimensional inspection tells us about geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not tell us everything about the physical condition of a component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the medical application, engineers may also need to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Particles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contamination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manufacturing environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact requirements depend heavily on the component and its intended use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A medical device component that comes into contact with a controlled fluid path, for example, may have very different requirements from an external housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why \u201cmedical-grade\u201d should never be treated as a single engineering requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application defines the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Than One Perfect Sample<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a component passes every dimensional inspection requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what happens if the next 100 parts show significant variation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where production consistency becomes important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Injection molding is a process, not a one-time event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Variation can come from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Material<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mold temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Injection conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Packing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cycle time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tool condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machine variation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single excellent sample does not automatically demonstrate a stable production process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For precision medical components, engineers need to understand not only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIs this part within class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan the process repeatedly produce parts within specification?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">08 \u2014 Validation Is Different From Inspection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is particularly important in NPD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspection asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does this part meet the defined specification?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation addresses a broader question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the product and its manufacturing process consistently meet the requirements associated with its intended use?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CMM can tell you whether a feature is located within a specified tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cannot, by itself, prove the entire product or manufacturing process is suitable for its intended application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why medical product development requires engineering, manufacturing, quality, and validation considerations to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dimensional inspection is one piece of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not the entire system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure precision component is not created only by its CAD geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its final characteristics can be influenced by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Material \u2192 Tool \u2192 Machine \u2192 Process \u2192 Inspection \u2192 Handling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When something changes, engineers need to understand what else may be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A material grade changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mold insert is modified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A critical process parameter changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A supplier changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An inspection method changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each change can potentially affect product performance or process consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For controlled medical manufacturing, this makes documentation, change control, and traceability important parts of the engineering system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not paperwork for its own sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is being able to understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What was made, how it was made, and whether the process remained under control.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image important point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reviewing a medical plastic component, it is tempting to focus on the numbers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00b10.05 mm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00b10.02 mm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00b10.01 mm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But tighter tolerance does not automatically mean better engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which characteristics actually determine the safety,
